UEFA European Cup Winners Cup

Originated to mirror the success of the European Champions Cup this competition was set up to reward the winners of domestic cup competitions across Europe to play against each other in a simple knockout format. First played in 1960 as a pilot tournament, UEFA recognised the competition and took full control a year later and by 1968 had all its members participating in the competition.

Due to the success of the Champions League and the loss of interest during its later years the tournament was abolished in 1999 with the continents domestic cup winners instead rewarded with participation in the UEFA Cup.
