UEFA European Championship

Originally the idea of French Football Secretary General Henri Delaunay who proposed a continental national football competition in 1927 to rival that in South America. It wasn’t until after his death in 1955 a tournament to coincide with the FIFA World Cup was put in place.

The original tournament featured 17 teams with the qualifying stages starting in 1958 with four teams reaching the finals in France. Today UEFA has 55 member associates with 24 nations participating in the competitions finals.

1996: Germany 2-1 Czech Republic (England) *aet (sudden death goal)

2000: France 2-1 Italy (Netherlands & Belgium) *aet (sudden death goal)

2004: Greece 1-0 Portugal (Portugal)

2008: Spain 1-0 Germany (Austria & Switzerland)

2012: Spain 4-0 Italy (Poland & Ukraine)

2016: Portugal 1-0 France (France) *aet
