The Scout: Sam Johnstone

Age: 24

Position: Goalkeeper

Club: Aston Villa

Country: England

Watched: : Aston Villa 1-1 Hull City (Saturday 5th August 2017)

Performance: 7 out of 10

Potential: 8 out of 10

Built how Goalkeepers used to be built back in the day of simply putting the ‘big lad’ in goal. Big, strong, empowering at 6ft4in Johnstone is a presence with physique and size to suggest not much should get by him.

Like many before him, Johnstone is a product of the Manchester United youth academy that has been made surpless to requirements for their need to have ready-made world class options in place.

Johnstone, currently on loan at Aston Villa is already at his eighth different club and nearing the age where he needs regular first team football a good stint in the Championship is likely to be followed with a more permanent move away from Old Trafford.

He’ll catch anything, come out for crosses, take a hit, hit back, save shots and kick well all day and having played his young career through the England youth teams looks destined to one day fulfil his potential as an International Goalkeeper.

Whether Johnstone will get his chance at United is slim pickings. Much better would be a strong season with Aston Villa and should they go up no doubt Steve Bruce will be first in line for his long term signature.
